Review from Publisher’s Weekly Crosby (On Bended Knee) stays true to form in this lively late-19th-century romance about Sophia Vanderwahl, a Boston heiress funding her delinquent fiancé, Harlan Penn, who has gone off to explore the Yucatan and, as it becomes apparent, the joy of native women. Looking for retribution, Sophia sets out to find Harlan and give back his engagement ring. She hires Jack MacAuley, an overbearing adventurer–and old rival of Harlan’s–to take her to Mexico. Though suspicious of Sophia’s motives in using him, Jack needs the money to finance an expedition of his own. Jack is convinced that Sophia is out to sabotage his boat, but before long, angry sparks turn into romantic ones. Gradually Jack and Sophia each learn to trust the other as both lover and friend. The entertaining banter of Crosby’s characters will keep readers engaged in this humorous romance. (Nov.)

From RT Book Reviews Once again, Tanya Anne Crosby gifts readers with a love story to cherish. Her amazing gift for spinning a colorful yarn will enthrall as the reader is swept away on the waves of Jack and Sophias heartwarming voyage of discovery.

I read the first three books, one after the other, and loved them. They had borderline too much sex per story, but it was easy enough to skim past to the stories when the sex scenes got a bit too long. They were well written sex scenes, but I prefer that more weight be given to the plot and less to the sex scenes.

I was eager to read this book with Broc's story because I enjoyed the first three so much, but it was a huge disappointment. The book was one long, tedious sex scene after another with hardly any plot. It was almost as if the minuscule storyline was was interrupting the sex scenes.

The beginning was extremely promising. Broc is sitting in a forest mourning his dead dog, when a stray dog appears and they begin to bond. Since Broc's dog had been so significant in the first three stories, the appearance of a new dog seemed to foreshadow an engaging plot. Sure enough, the dog's owner, a beautiful English woman, appears searching for her dog. Broc's history predisposes him to dislike the English, so having an English heroine for Broc has the potential for a highly entertaining storyline.

This first meeting between Broc and Elizabet seems to bear out the belief that this will be a delightful story. Broc is instantly smitten and Elizabet finds Broc to be very attractive, after her initial fears are assuaged. The dialogue sparkles and we can see that Elizabet will lead Broc on a merry chase and leave him feeling pole-axed. Then a comedy of errors occurs when someone in Elizabet's party tries to kill her with an arrow. Broc pushes her away and grabs her. Neither Elizabet nor the rest of her party realize what happened, Broc knocks her brother out, she thinks Broc killed him, and Broc abducts her until he can get her to safety and explain what happened. After that, everything fell apart and the book became one looooong borrrrrrring sex scene after another, with nothing much happening in-between. If Broc and Elizabet weren't thinking about sex, talking about sex, or having sex, the heroes and heroines from the previous stories were. Oi! Makes the reader think the Middle Ages consisted of nothing but horny men and women spending all of their time either copulating or thinking about copulating.

I realize a lot of readers like the long sex scenes in some of Crosby's books, but I prefer more story and less sex. Broc's story had a lot of potential and this one did a disservice to his character; it could have been so much more than it was. Not recommended.

First, let me say that The Highland Brides series has some of the most BEAUTIFUL, artistic, and mesmerizing covers I've ever seen on editions.

But even more beautiful and spellbinding are the stories! Each one gets better and better as you move through and this final full-length story is the icing on the cake...or the froth on the ale...or the ...well, you get the point.

Finally it is Broc's turn for love.

Broc the Blonde is the last of his clan. The rest were all slaughtered by the English when he was but a lad. He's found a home as a trusted man of the McKinnon's and has a close friend in Colin Mac Brodie. Still, he begins to yearn for a family of his own. But until now, the only thing willing to sleep near him it night was his beloved dog. Unkind fate, however, even has taken his pet away from him.

Strolling in the woods he comes across a mangy mutt and is drawn to the poor creature. Just as it warms to him, a fiery haired woman bursts onto the scene and claims the dog. As they stand talking, Broc sees a bowman taking aim--not at himself, but at the beautiful young lass! Even though she is English, he feels a fierce pull to protect her and springs into action, whether she appreciates it or not.

Elizabet was horrified! The man she thought to be a gentle giant had suddenly turned into a wild beast, fighting off her father's men and taking her captive. True, her father never should've sent her to far off Scotland to live with her cousin Piers Montgomerie without first warning him and allowing him to help ensure her safe passage--but she hardly expected to be taken captive by one lone barbarian. And what of her brother and the others? Was he safe? Was the pouch full of jewels that made up her dowry still in her brother's trusted posession?

Broc knows that someone wishes Elizabet dead. Even though she was fighting with all her wee might, he knew he had to get her away from those men. Something wasn't right. If only she'd trust him.

As they work together to try to unravel the mystery, Broc's actions endanger the fragile peace between the clans. But the two are drawn to each other against all odds. Has Broc finally found a woman that doesn't cower from his massive appearance? Has Elizabet actually found someone who truly cares for her and will cherish her always?

It's not all easy. There are some HILARIOUS scenes between the two as they battle wits and wills. As with all of the author's heroines, Elizabet isn't about to sit back and let a man take complete control of the situation. At one point, she even manages to get the best of Broc, flipping him onto the ground! Both of the characters are so likeable that you find yourself turning page after page, anxiously awaiting the day they are finally happily ever after.

And of course, there are plenty of the characters from the first 3 books that add to the story. Readers get the weddings of both Leith and Colin to their loves as well as lots more glimpses into the lives of the McKinnon and his Bride.

Wonderful series! I loved them all! Fun to read--great stories--steamy romance--sweet true love--and a good laugh here and there along the way.

1. The MacKinnon's Bride
2. Lyon's Gift
3. On Bended Knee
4. Lion Heart
5. Highland Song (novella)
Oh, how I enjoyed this story. This is a story where the romance builds slowly which is the best kind. There is lovemaking, outside of marriage and mildly described. But, because I enjoyed this couple and felt a connection, it wasn't vulgar, but sweet. Of course, some will disagree.

I loved the spunk of the h and how she took devastating news and took control. Our H was a charming, honorable man and they brought out the best and sometimes worse in each other - which made for a very entertaining story.

There is no cheating for our couple, no cliffhanger and we get a HEA that just was perfect. I am not going into the premise, because others have explained it better than me. Just what you may get out of reading it. I enjoyed it! (ljb)
This fourth book in Crosby's Highland Bride series follows characters we have met on the journey so far, as well as introducing new ones. We see some of the causes for hiding the truth, as well as the consequences of that omission. We see settled couples from past stories weigh in on this new situation, adding depth to the community Crosby has crafted for her readers.

I learned a lot about the community from Broc's thought processes; namely, the reasons he had for lying.
I enjoyed seeing Broc fall for someone, as well as getting a new dog. I was disquieted, learning about Elizabet's understanding of her place in society, & about her expectations of men. Elizabet's upbringing gave her a rather peculiar view of the relationship between men & women, which created some interesting expectations that were mostly lampshaded by Broc's behaviour.

All in all, a lovely story. Worth the price, worth the whole series. Well written, very few errors, a flowing, easily read style.
