This book was written by life. Not only the excitement of adventure that smothers in all of us but also the bravery it takes to perseue one's path.Â
 Africa .... For all who lived there it brings us back to memories of a life we once lived. For those with sea leg's we can feel the deck under our feet, with closed  our eyes we hear the sounds of  planking and rigging ... The salty sea breeze blows us through the book....great reading ...
An engaging, insightful, and fascinating read from Di Beach as a young woman exploring (on many levels) what is important and not. The tales of life on the seas with young children, a head strong husband, and different crew members is interesting all on its own. When you add the perspective Di Beach provides of local cultures, communities, and food from the destinations she explored, you have a book that you do not want to close. A thoroughly enjoyable read.
This is not a story for everyone. It is for those that had wanderlust in their youth and can cheer on a person who had it and then went on with life. It is among the top three books I read last year. Someday, I will take my wife to the mountains of Spain and find Di to have a glass of wine and say thank you.
Beautifully written account of a young couple's remarkable adventure in Africa and on the oceans. Despite the focus of the book being on the creation/building/sailing of an Arab dhow, and not being a sailor, I was surprised at how fascinating I found it. The author paints such vivid pictures of life in Lamu and the difficulties of acquiring what was needed to build a seaworthy vessel, at a time when so many of the items we would take for granted, were not available in 1960s Kenya. Great book.
This wonderful book is a voyage for the mind, the heart, and the senses! More than a spell-binding chronicle of adventure at sea, it is a thoughtful, heartfelt exploration of a rapidly vanishing world in which people communicate, face technical challenges, learn lessons, and create connections with each other without much help from the technology we now take for granted. Di Beach tells a fine tale, peppered with nuggets of her growing wisdom about design, construction, cross-cultural understanding, cooking, child-rearing, and, best of all, the strength and vulnerability of the human species. She is at her best as she delivers matter-of-fact accounts of astonishing tasks accomplished and unknown strengths tapped. As I closed the book on its heart-rending epilogue, all I could think was, "Oh, tell me another!"
